EPMD Roofs

EPDM or Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer is a rubber membrane used for roofing. EPDM has gained popularity as an alternative material for new and replacement roofs that are flat or slightly sloped, where waterproofing is critical. This is because the longevity of EPDM is greater than other materials such as tar.

Durability of EPDM

The rubber material in an EPDM roof allows for flexibility. This is especially important as a roof ages, where weathering can cause roof joints to crack. By remaining flexible in lower temperatures and staying durable in higher ones, EPDM has a higher elemental resistance.  EPDM roofs are also resistant to abrasion, membrane fatigue (degradation of the rubber membrane) and ultraviolet radiation (UV).

EPDM Use

EPDM is sold in single-ply sheets or as a liquid. As a liquid, it can be sprayed, rolled, or brushed on. EPDM cannot be bonded directly over asphalt, tar, or shingles. It is recommended that a new layer of 5/8-inch plywood, 5/8-inch OSB (oriented strandboard), or polyisocyanurate board with a fiberglass backing be used. While manufacturer warranty coverage varies from 5 to 30 years, studies have shown that properly installed EPDM roofs can have a life expectancy of 40 to 50 years.
